Canon's Vixia Shrinks To "mini" Size

A tiny camcorder built for bloggers is Canon's latest.

Canon pulled the wraps off its latest Vixia camcorder—and it's not what we expected in the least. Taking cues from their irreverent, quirky Powershot N digital camera, the Vixia mini, isn't just a tiny camcorder. It's a video camera with a small 160-degree fisheye lens and a unique form factor.

On top, an LCD. On bottom, a kickstand.

Its size is one of its key features, ringing in at a shirt pocket-sized 3"x3.8"x1". With its built-in kickstand and swiveling LCD, the Vixia mini can stand up on its own and record a scene without a tripod or a hand to hold it.

Its small size puts it roughly in the same category as cameras like the GoPro, although its 2.7" capacitive touchscreen is a big differentiating factor there. Unlike the GoPro, the Vixia mini allows you to see yourself mirrored on its screen, whihci s ideal for framing purposes. Like many of the action cams on the market, the Vixia mini can also record in slow motion, including 1/2x speed at 720p resolution and 1/4x speed at VGA resolution.

Though the Vixia mini doesn't come with any internal flash storage, its slim body has a microSD card slot. Thankfully, it sounds like Canon didn't skimp on video— it records full HD, with available 1080/30p and 1080/24p frame rates. Canon says the new Vixia plays well with Android and iOS smartphones, too, over WiFi. Using Canon's CameraAccess2 app, users can control the mini and and upload footage to social media services.

The Vixia mini certainly has a unique, flat design.

The Vixia mini will be available this September for $299.99, in both black and white. Canon will also be making a case and wrist strap available for launch.
