Canon's New Flagship HF G30 Has a Ton of Upgrades

With full HD 60p recording, built-in WiFi, and MP4 video modes, the HF G30 has everything the HF G20 lacks.

If you were one of those people who was disappointed by the Canon HF G20 earlier this year, you're gonna want to focus your sights on Canon's newest Vixia camcorder instead: the HF G30. In a surprising move, Canon will make its newest flagship consumer camcorder available to consumers come June—effectively downgrading the HF G20 just a few months after its own launch.

The new HF G30 is loaded with features, including all of the specs that were curiously missing from the HF G20. It has the ability to record 1080/60p video (a first for a Canon Vixia), and it can shoot MP4 video at a bitrate up to 35Mbps. The camcorder comes with a new OLED touchscreen, increased zoom capability (up to 20x), and a slightly larger image sensor to improve the performance of the camcorders updated image stabilization system. Also included on the G30 is built-in WiFi, a feature Canon previously unveiled on its entry-level HF R-series Vixias earlier this year.

The HF G30 is a lot pricier than the G20, but it comes with a ton of extra features.

The G30's design is very similar to its predecessor, although the larger lens does make for a significantly heavier camcorder (roughly two pounds fully-loaded). Unlike the G20, which came with 32GB of built-in memory, the HF G30 has no internal memory. The camcorder does have two SD memory card slots.

With a longer zoom lens, the G30 is significantly heavier and a bit larger than its predecessor.

According to Canon, the HF G30 will start shipping in June and is expected to retail for $1699. Along with the announcement of this new Vixia, Canon also unveiled two pro-level camcorders: the XA20 and XA25. These pro models have the same core specs as the HF G30, but they come with XLR inputs and a mic holder on a detachable handlebar.
