I have had this camera for 2 years, it is used on a daily basis along with a 5D, 40D and a 30D. I write to commend Canon on this camera because it is a positive "workhorse" and the body I most use. I shoot a variety of assignments from weddings to documentary, journalistic work. My equipment is used in all weather and lighting conditions. I shoot much of my work with available light - high ISO is where this camera excels - a "sweet spot" is at about 2500 though I get excellent results up to 6400 using all "L" lenses. Color converted to B/W is frequently used as many clients are requesting B/W work. Canon battery grips are used on all of my cameras - been using Canon since the early 1990's - excellent equipment!

I own the Canon 40D, 5D, and now the 5D Mark II which I just received a couple of days ago. Right out of the box it gave amazing photos with the colors exactly what I saw with my naked eye. I'm amazed and think I've finally found the camera I've been looking for. I only purchased the body since I have a large assortment of Canon L series lenses which I use with all my Canon's. I haven't played with all the features and settings yet and don't know if I will for some of them I'm not really interested in, but I know their there if I ever need them. (Example Live Video) I'm a wildlife and nature photographer and take numerous still shots of both, I've been looking for a great camera which would give me fantastic photos of both without having to always do editing to the photos to get the desired results. Just the first few photos I took right out of the box with the Mark II showed me this was the camera I've been waiting for. I also took a few photos in the fully manual mode using a few settings and so far superior results seems to be what the 5D Mark II is all about. Thanks Canon !!!

Canon's 5D Mark II

I can't say enough good things about this camera. The images I've taken so far with this camera have been crisp, and tack sharp. The live view with 5x magnification really comes in handy for those times when you want to have absolute precise focus control down to the half a millimeter.

With my older 30D the AF was pretty accurate but always left me thinking, "Hmm, it could have been a little sharper in camera".

The low-light performance on this machine is as advertised. At ISO 2000 I was an image equivalent to what my 30D produced at ISO200. ISO 3200 was equivalent to my old camera's ISO 400 to 600.

The 5D Mark II has really opened up a lot of possibilities.

So far I've tested the new camera on a 17-40mm L, 100-400mm L and a 50mm f/1.4 and all 3 have worked well. Although the 100-400mm on live view was tricky since it was not on a tripod and i was trying to capture 1080p video with manual focus.

Finally, besides image quality, precision, and 1080p the LCD is a real game changer, accurately showing me the level of noise and sharpness in a photo without me needing to plug it into my computer.

Cons: I'd like more AF points. Maybe twice as many and spread out. Built in flash could come in handy but really not necessary.

Better then expected

My photography of choice is underwater photography. Water is a demanding medium for photography, so I was looking to upgrade to something of higher quality than the current Canon D30. I had been thinking D5, then when Canon made the decision to upgrade to a D5 Mark II I knew that was the camera I was wanting.

I have had the new D5 Mark II for about a month now, but haven't had it in the water yet. That will come next month. In the meantime I have been putting the new D5 Mark II through the paces and trying to learn the camera and test it out as to use and image quality.

The biggest issue with underwater photography is available light. Coupled with the D5 Mark II I purchased a Canon EF 24mm f/1.4L II USM wide angle lens to use in an Ikelite housing with twin Ikelite DS 160 strobes.

We will sometimes blow images up our images to 20 by 30 prints. So, I have tested the image quality with ISO settings from 100 to 6400 and have found great image quality up to 6400. At the upper end of the ISO settings you begin to see some noise that effect image quality. However even at the high ISO at the upper end, it is still very good and compared to other cameras and simply blows the D30 away.

Having confidence that I can juice up the ISO to get that difficult low light shot is very important to me. I will likely shoot under 400 ISO, however I won't hesitate to juice it up to 1600 to get that most difficult shot and know that I will get a quality image. I could not be happier with my choice of the D5 Mark II and the newly released EF 24mm f/1.4L II USM lens.

I always shoot manual mode with auto-focus and have found the D5 Mark II so easy to use with no transition from the D30 to the new D5. This is a quality built camera with some great features. I have yet to discover any problems with either the ease of use or the image quality.

My review relates to only stills and I have not used the HD Video feature yet.

I can't wait to get this camera in the water.

Great camera

I received my EOS 5D Mark II some weeks ago and did over 1000 shots. I'm by no means a pro - I'm just an amateur. The picture I can create with the 5D are on a whole new level. I thought my old camera (an EOS 400D) was great - now it feels like a toy. The 5D is better in every possible aspect.

In the past I also created some video projects with video cameras. Therefore I was very interested in the movie mode of the EOS 5D Mark II. Soon I realized that I can control neither aperture nor ISO or shutter speed. That's when it became obvious that the video mode wasn't really useful. After some tests I also noticed jaggies on diagonal borders that appear only in video mode. Depending on the subject that can ruin a shot. Also it seems that I cannot control audio gain. I don't understand why those features are missing.

EOS 5D Mark II makes great pictures. But is not really useful to create videos.
